BSNL spins web of lies to save Raja |
 |
|
The BSNL is cooking up one lie after another to save its ‘political’ master, who reportedly arm-twisted the officials in granting WiMax franchise to a non-existent company.
First, the BSNL claimed that the franchisee short-listed for running WiMax operation in Chennai, West Bengal and Haryana and Himachal Pradesh was one Ampules (company). The news was widely reported in the media. When The Pioneer carried a report on Wednesday that this was a non-existent company, the BSNL came with a rejoinder, identifying the short-listed firm as Ampoules & Auto Private Limited of Kolkata.
In its rejoinder to The Pioneer, the BSNL’s Chennai unit said, “The company M/s Ampoules & Auto Private Limited, Kolkata, who has participated in the said tender is a registered firm under the Registrar of Companies, Government of India.” The signatory of the letter is AGM (Admn & Legal) of BSNL, Chennai unit.
A cursory look at the online registry of the Ministry of Corporate Affairs shows that Ampoules & Auto Private Limited is not registered as a company with any of the Registrars of Companies.

Finland: Broadband Is a Legal Right |
 |
|
Come July 2010, every Fin will have access to a 1 Megabit-per-second broadband connection. Finland just became the first country in the world to sign a law that provides every citizen of the country with a legal right to a broadband connection.
The Finnish government had already announced that every citizen should have access to a 100 Megabit-per-second broadband connection by the end of 2015. Now, it took an intermediary step toward that goal. On Oct. 14, the Ministry of Transport and Communications announced that every Fin should have a legal right to a 1 Megabit-per-second connection by next summer.
The move could pave the way for other countries to start looking at broadband as its citizens’ inalienable legal right, akin to freedom of speech and freedom of movement. That makes a lot of sense: Most of us can no longer perform our work duties, do homework or communicate with friends without having access to the Internet. Many Web-based communications and video services, such as Skype, require a broadband connection to work. People need broadband connections to live normal lives, as Finland is the first nation to acknowledge.

KOCHI: Kerala's major cities are all set to become wi-fi with the BSNL’s WiMax (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) service getting ready to be launched by the end of March, enabling access to internet anywhere.
This will enable the customers to use internet at a speed of 2 mbps anywhere in Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, Kozhikode and Thrissur districts.
BSNL has completed a survey and adopted a plan of action for providing the service.
The study of radio waves and various frequencies has been completed.
The results are encouraging and the entire state will be wi-fi soon.
The city limits of the four districts will be covered first.
Later it will be extended to other parts of the districts.
Corporate offices and people who are travelling will benefit the most since the users can do away with cabling for accessing the internet.
BSNL Ernakulam principal general manager M Haridas said that the initial benefits are for those who want to use internet while travelling.
There is no need for a modem and any computer which has the facility for accessing the wi-fi can use the new facility.
The WiMax system will be installed in all the BSNL mobile towers so that the wi-fi service will be available in all the parts of the state which have mobile connectivity.
According to Haridas, the existing users and the new customers can avail themselves of the facility as technology for broadband now used by the BSNL customers and wi-fi is different. The BSNL is yet to come out with the tariffs for the wi-fi system.
However, there will be pre-paid and post-paid options for the customers.
At present, the BSNL broadband is available for those having land phone connection or USP portal.
With the introduction of the new facility, customers can access the internet without a land phone connection or USP portal.
Almost 30 times faster than 3G, the WiMax can support data speeds of up to 70 mbps, against 3G’s 380 kbps to 2 mbps.
