Coppernic Desktop Search
Software News,Reviews & Tips I've been using Google Desktop (beta) to search for files on my system for about a month now. I found some major drawbacks with the beta version, which doesn't make the search results from Google Desktop very comprehensive. For example, Google desktop doesn't allow me to search through my media collection ! So I went back to the Internet to search for a better desktop search alternative.

After a short search online, I landed at Coppernic's site, which prompted me to download the Coppernic Desktop Search. This is a 2.6MB download, much bigger than the Google Desktop Download (400KB). Does that mean that Coppernic has more features? Let's install it and check it out. The installation of Coppernic Desktop Search was quite straightforward. Just keep clicking on the next button to complete the installation. The installer puts a search bar in your Taskbar, which may be a nuisance if you're running on anything smaller than a 1024x768 screen. You'll need to disable this if it gets in your way. The search functionality seems to be quite impressive. It searches through your emails (Outlook and Outlook Express only!), Contacts, Internet Explorer History & Favourites, Pictures, Music Files, Videos, PDF Files, Word .DOC, .RTF files, Excel sheets, Powerpoint, HTML and Text files. You can also specify what file you are looking for. This was another drawback with Google Desktop - it was hard to specify what kind of file you were searching for. As with all desktop search programs, I needed to wait a while for Coppernic to index all the files in my system. The amount of time taken for indexing depends on how much data you have in your system. The indexing process hardly takes any processing resources, since it indexes your system when it's idle. So you don't feel any drain in the system resources when you are working on it. The search results seem to be quite good, with options which allowed me to filter the search results further. When you're using the file search mode, I could filter my search by filetype, date, size and folder. The music searh allowed me to refine my search by Title, Artist, Album, Genre and date. After a day or two of using Coppernic, I decided to retire Google Desktop ( until they come up with these features in the future).
