From my experience its better to wait for 1-2 weeks before downloading the new release.
I was running 7.10 which was pretty stable and when 8.04 was released as LTS I upgraded immediately and ran into couple of issues. I expected it to be more stable since it was a LTS.

the only major problem i have faced with hardy is that hibernate/suspend don't work too well. everything, else works ok.

since my CD has gone kaput, I have used the bootable USB pen drive and trust me, it's faster than using the CD. I was sick of using Vista.

On Intrepid for more than a week now - seems much more stable than Hardy. Used to have freezes on Hardy - the keyboard stopped responding after a while. This problem seems to have dissapeared on Intrepid.
The restricted drivers for Broadcom still doesn't work for my chipset - so still on ndiswrappers for wifi
Video seems to have gone kaput on Intrepid - having a hard time getting even dvds to play on this distro.
What are your experiences?

i got nvidia driver problem after upgrading from hardy, had to reinstall the envy drivers. once had a total freeze with keyboard leds blinking madly, after resume from hibernation. but, apart from these it's working okay.
and yes, had to disable pc speaker from beeping, even though it was unchecked in sound settings.
