... and I was absolutely amazed to see that only a tiny, tiny, minority elect for plans of over 256. Less than 5%?

But they don't seem to realise that it is the exorbitant cost that must be behind this.

Generally, it is a pity that they have not really compared with the rest of the world on a cost basis: just speed.

One of the reasons for the majority selecting 256kps is that the unlimited plan is only 256kbps, surely TRAI have to understand that.
Also TRAI is comparing with statutory minimum speeds in other countries, maybe they should be comparing with average speeds.

Average speeds from SpeedTest.net by continent -
North America 4452 kb/s 889 kb/s
Europe 3753 kb/s 848 kb/s
Australasia 3667 kb/s 464 kb/s
Asia 2038 kb/s 628 kb/s
South America 843 kb/s 273 kb/s

The consultation paper doesn't talk about Download/ Upload Limit (datacap) at all! IMO....We don't need higher speed (>1Mbps). We need unlimited/higher datacap(>50GB/m) to start with.

Exactly,Thats the point we need to drive through their heads Razz
Home plans shoudnt mean 2.5GB limit,Atleast start with 10GB limit

Its very similar to giving a chopstick with soup in an "all you can eat" buffet. ROFL.

They should implement bandwidth shaping with the capped plans and also increase the datacap. This has been my "midway soln" to the problem.

Dear Mr. S. K. Gupta,

This mail is regarding the Status Paper on Broadband Speed January, 2008. I just want to let you know that the document is silent about Download/ Upload Limit (datacap) used by all Indian ISP. If you kindly check all the Home 256Kbps plans offered by BSNL, all of them have datacap of just 1-2.5GB/month. This kind of datacap is certainly not enough by today's standard. We need unlimited/higher datacap(>50GB/month) plans to start with. I also think that minimum broadband speed should start with 512Kbps onward and at an affordable price. ISPs should not use "up to" mechanism to cheat their customers.

Kindly look into the datacap issue and ensure that all ISPs providing broadband services consistently.

Thank You,

I think that they are blocking most of the common email domains (like yahoo, hotmail etc.) at the server level itself and it is only a matter of time before they block gmail too.. This is the best time to check the pathetic mail services of `bsnl.net.in' itself. I would love to see them blocking their own servers, thereby isolating themselves, or just blocking all the id's apart from a closed group which contains their id's. In the former scenario, it would give us a great material to fight them with.. am thinking on a tangent and will reply back later in the day. Do hope to get your reply by then. Will also send the mails in the evening Very Happy
