Yes its cheap, at $7.95 a month for 400 MB of data transfer. But BSNL have a long long way to go in areas of customer service and attitude.
As of now their attitude is still ’’We are doing you a favour’. And its just impossible to associate the word ’’service’’ with their ’’Customer service’’. The phone is never answered if it rings, or its allways busy. If you do get someone on line, its allways someone whos totally unprofessional and tense, overworked and underpaid. Answers like ’’What am I supposed to do?’’ and ’’Its not my fault’’ in loud aggressive voices are quite common.

Hi Guys,
I'm using modem in "Routing And Bridging" mode for long time. However, recently I'm facing problem in getting connection. It takes 15-20min or even more to get the connection in peak hours. In modem (UTStarcom 300R) log I can see messages like "Fail to get IP address", "PADT received", "VC down", PPPoE interface down, etc. I'm quite sure its a problem at the DSLAM end, maybe its overloaded or poorly configured. In the early morning there is no such connection problem.
I have registered complain several times but BSNL guys have no clue about it. I guess they don't understand Router and Bridge mode. I have also tested using other modems and also using PPPoE dialer of XP and Vista and still it takes 3-5 min to connect. I need to use my modem in multi-user mode.
Has anyone facing such trouble here?
Thanks!

Router and Bridging?
I think it should be router mode or bridge mode.

I think it should be router mode or bridge mode. |
Scenario 1: Routed Connection to ISP
In this scenario, the ISP requires customers to have a routed connection to their access server. For a routed connection, the LAN and WAN interfaces must be IP-enabled. No bridging services need to be enabled.
Scenario 2: Bridged Connection to ISP
In this configuration, your ISP requires you to configure a bridged Internet connection. For a bridged internet connection, the WAN interface must be bridge-enabled.
Scenario 3: Routed and Bridged Connections to ISP
In this configuration, your LAN is like that described in Scenario 1, but also includes PCs that use a bridged Internet connection, then you should establish bridging services in addition to routing. This would also be necessary if the LAN includes PCs that use non-IP networking protocols, such has AppleTalk or IPX.
------------------------
I never touched the Bridging tab in config and as i see it now...
Bridging: enabled
WAN to WAN Bridging: enabled
BRAS: Disabled
ZIPB: Disabled
So, I guess that's why its showing "Mode: Routing And Bridging" in the system view page. Anyway, its my modem doing all the dialing and routing job. Today, being Sunday, there is no such connection problem but tomorrow I'll face the music again. I have to start modem by 7:30a and keep it on thru day.

Try setting your MTU in the router to 1452, this is the best setting for BSNL's poor lines, also change your LAN MTU with TCP Optimizer and set the same value, see if your connection problems go away.

tamal, I am at a loss with your definitions of routing and bridging. It is true that my networking knowledge is stale, and I would be hard put to suggest definitions defining the difference, which I remember as never having been 100% clear cut.
In the case of connecting to BSNL, or any similar IP-based broadband network:
In bridge mode, your PC runs PPoE, and receives an address on the BSNL net. the 'bridge' just acts a connection and the PPoE processes through it.
In router mode, your router runs PPoE, far fro being transparent, it is a very visible host on your LAN, and the BSNL net address is allocated to its WAN side.
There is no requirement from BSNL as to which method is used.
So, I don't understand why your router should talk about WAN to WAN bridging!
However, what I do or do not understand is not relevant to your problem, so please forgive my diversion!
...And I agree with you: my hunch also is that the problem is with BSNL

OK, all those "3 Scenarios" that I've posted above are from my modem's help file.
For multi-user config pls see the PDF from Calcutta Telephones. I have been following this document ever since BSNL launched Dataone and it has worked till now, even today. There is no word on Bridging or routing.
The problem is for the last couple of months I don't get connection quickly if I disconnect during peak hours, say 9am-7pm. It takes roughly 15-20 min and sometime even more to get the connection! During month-end it's just horrible. Most of the time I get errors like:
Failed To Get IP Address : Interface - ppp-0
PPP Interface Down : Interface - ppp-0
PPPoE Down
and in PPP interface page I see errors like:
Last Fail Cause: PADT received or VC down
Also, I see that MTU setting is
Actual MTU: 1492
Configured MTU: 1500
Today, I disabled "Bridge" mode. Should I disable "WAN to WAN Bridging" as well?
Thanks!

Again, I agree with your first instinct that the problem is at the BSNL end, and especially so as you have tried using a different modem (I think you said?).
However...
So long as you keep a careful note of the original settings (I find printing out config screens is a good way to do that) and a careful note of the changes that you make, then anything is worth a try!
Most important is to have your user name, password, the ADSL parameters and VC settings, just in case you change so much that you end up doing a factory reset --- or even do one accidentally!
