If you talk about simplicity - -it's gnome
and if you want eye candy .. kde

Linus supported KDE probably coz it has less bugs and the development community is huge... while for gnome people writing code are less...

but all in all it's a users choice anyway

xfce ... is pretty fast among others

Gnome:
+ Simple
+ Runs on GTK+ (is that correct?) which is what Firefox, Gaim, and lots of other programs use, so lends consistency.
- Dumb. Too dumbed-down, insulting users by treating them like idiots.
- Not enough configurability if you want it

KDE
+ Eye candy
+ Extremely powerful and configurable. For example,I like to decide whether to choose "Focus follows mouse", "Focus under mouse" or "Focus strictly under mouse" (or the other useless Windows-like option, I don't know what it's called), and KDE lets me do these.
+ Another example: You can set your wallpaper to "Slide Show"
+ Konsole is cooler than the Gnome Terminal
+ Comes with great apps like AmaroK and K3B, which are much better than their Gnome equivalents (Sure, you can run them from Gnome, but that's not their native environment, and they take a long time to load, virtually loading KDE itself!)
+ Has lots of choices in the menus by default, which is good.
- Has lots of choices in the menus by default, which can be confusing if you don't know or don't care which of the equivalent apps to use.
- Takes a few seconds longer to load (and that's a lot!)

The other WMs are if you have a slow computer or Gnome/KDE consume a lot of resources. XFCE is great, I've heard (that's why Ubuntu comes in three flavours, Ubuntu, Kubuntu and Xubuntu). fvwm works too.

Of course, without a doubt, the best Window Manager is clearly Ratpoison Wink

Guys I am a relative newbie to Linux , in the sense , for the past 3-4 years I have been dipping my fingers into it now and then . Well apart from
installing and reinstalling the distro's provided by PcQuest , I have had no use for it as such . In the recent days though , as my friend and me sat musing on the roof , soaking in the sun , watching auntieji's beatiful daughters , berating our state of unemployment , we decided to play a game . Its something I chanced upon in Wikipedia , Linux from scratch ie build your own distro . Well needless to say , the going is getting tough Very Happy and we are now bashing our heads against BASH begginer guide , courtesy again Wikipedia . I think this is going to be a pretty long ..... long game .

KDE all the way. Apart from the simplicity and eye candy, it integrates every application in one whole. With GNOME, it becomes too difficult to navigate around.

In fact, KDE has become more refined recently; it makes more sense to stick on to it. It all boils down to personal choice; but it should be informed.

I am glad we are finally getting Linux users or queries.

Srikanth, you' d have to ask Vinu for that. I believe, we had plans for a small Wiki too. More than that, a starting point for all the newbies.

One thing is for sure. Once you get the hang of Linux, there is no going back. Earlier forum members would remember that I was an unbashed supporter of Mac Os for all the eye chandy. But with KDE 3.5, I am willing to revise my stand.

KDE all the way! Yes, it's bloated a bit; but then you'd never feel that your computer has slowed down a bit or anything of that sorts.

As mentioned earlier, gnome is more sober, looks elegant and simple. If you are the type who keeps changing your desktop setting every other day, go for KDE. It looks more cluttered, provides all possible options that you can set and KDE applications are more integrated. You need to pay for the bloated image though; consumes too much of resources. I prefer an integrated environment. I have been using GNOME desktop and laptop for the last 6 years and run KDE applications ( K3B, digikam etc ) when ever required. For my day to day programming needs, gnome is faster and good enough.

It pains me tht people have always been flaming KDE vs Gnome or MS vs Linux or whatever.
To set the record straight Gnome is not as mature as a framework as KDE is. KDE is much more matured & leans over more to how Windows look & feel for compatibility & usability reasons. Gnome however tries to be more innovative, the look & feel is more logical & different. Windows has always tried to use short-cuts & in that sense corrrupted us. For an example top-posting rather than bottom-posting which we see here in the forum.
LFS or Linux from Scratch is tough as well as BLFS or Beyond Linux from scratch when u start compiling the packages & so on & so forth. But if u stay the course then u will have not only the fastest but also one of the most stable & secure systems which u can have for years & years. The only jinx here as a desktop user things are bound to change every 6 months (the next release) & then the security/stable bug-fixes & so on & so forth.
Life was simple in Win'95 but then we were not so networked as we are today Smile
