Considering the following network diagram as being common for every dataone user.

User [A] ->bsnl network ->bsnl gateway ->(bsnl dnsl [B]) ->INTERNET [C]

The bsnl dns is in ( ) because it may or may not be used.

Case 1:
If bsnl dns is used then the route for the traffic to travel is short.

Case 2:
If bsnl dns is not used, but 3rd party like treewalk is used; then the traffic still moves from [A] to [C] ; but since the root servers are at [C] double traffic is traversed

In case 1 ; dns resolution traffic is between [A] and [B] and the website is opened.

In case 2: dns resolution traffic is between [A] and [C] and the website is served.

Considering that route [A] to [C] is longer ; how does it help to have your own dns server like treewalk or any other.

Ultimately even treewalk needs to ask the root servers at [C] for the octet for a given domain name.

Now ; since it has been discussed in numerous threads that the latency is high because the traffic from India to Singapore travels all over the globe instead of going directly to singapore ; isn't it better to use the bsnl dnsl instead and reduce time.

Can someone throw some light ; on which will be shorter [A] to [B] or [A] to [C]

Wrong, you are really anti TW, totally missing the point and I bet someone at TW really ticked you off. TW makes your own machine into a DNS server, so how in heaven's name can the route be longer than crappy hardware BSNL DNS server where I doubt the sysadmin even knows how to update or refresh the roots. Clear your doubts and install it, test your system before install with DNSRU and then with TW and DNSRU, do this at peak hours and you will see my point.

Arup ; even TW needs root servers to find the octet for the domain name you enter

TW travels from [A] to [C] [ machine to root server ; gets the data ; then from [C] to [A] ; and then again the octet is sent from [A] to [C]

Without the root servers ; TW cannot know the OCTET for a domain name.

I hope I am being a bit clearer now.

Go to ntcanuck and read, TW resolves DNS on its own, to make it even faster, any one of the root servers that is ICANN, OSRC and OSRN can be installed. Best person to ask this question would be Obiwan, he would give you all the details, you can either mail him or join his NNTP where he has posted myriads of facts regarding TW.

TW can never GO direct to Internet.

It HAS to travel the route [A] to [C]

In fact NO traffic goes direct to Internet

You CANNOT bypass bsnl gateway ; no matter what you do.

Kindly understand what I am trying to say

TW is like having your own petrol pump instead of having to use the petrol pump at delhi ;

If the only route to agra is using the road to delhi ; you cannot bypass that road ; no matter what you do

Even if you have your own petrol pump the supply has to come through the delhi road ; there is no other route

I hope I am clear now

TW is not the pump, its an oil rig with the refinery itself. Very Happy

As you can see from above, the effectiveness of TW is clearly defined, this was tested on a Verizon connection, one of the fastest in US at 16mbps.

If TW is the refinery where does the crude oil come from ; does TW has its own root server inbuilt or does it depend on external source.

TW uses ICANN root by default, you can use OSRC or OSRN.

In case you have forgotten, the oil is already there in the oil rig. Laughing

If TW is the oil rig then why bother for the root servers.

Anyways rootservers store terabytes of data; which cannot exist on your machine.
