I am a new user of bsnl plan 900 +. After reinstalling windows XP a while ago , i have been encountering a problem.
First of all i dont have an UPS as the power source in my area is pretty consistent wrt supply and voltage both.

Anyway after doing a full reinstall i fired up my modem and it works perfectly fine AS LONG AS I'm sitting right there doing something or the other .. flipping webpages and stuff. The moment i take off for a break, ( or to be more precise , 4 - 5 mins after) the connection slows down and shuts up .. but the rest of the system hangs till i reset the modem ( SmartaX 882) power switch.
then its back to connecting again.
This has been bugging me and i'm running AVG and scan my deski twice a day. So i'm think its unrelated to viruses or Malware.( but i'm not too sure )

I'd be happy if anyone had some suggestions or if you need more info before you can offer any just let me know.

Thanks in adv.

Have you got any screen-savers or power saving options enabled?

filepipette, check the power saving options of your lan card..

My Computer > Control Panel > Performance & Maintenance > System > Hardware > Device Manager > Network Adapters > Your LAN Card > Properties > Power Management > Allow the Computer to turn off this device to save Power.

Uncheck the Box if it is already Checked. Now see.

Ravi.

@ filepipette

Have you by any chance opened up your router page and seen the connection settings?? Maybe your connection is set to close after a few minutes of being idle... Dunno how that would affect your comp, nonetheless check these settings.

HI I have a Huwei mt841 router and a windows server 2003 R2 server. The Lan consists to 15 windows xp machines.server is configured as a DNS server and is the only domain controller in the network. This is how my present network configuration is ADSL line>>MT841 router(static ip bsnl)>>Switch>>LAN.The router is configured to release static ip's and the defalt gateway is 192.168.1.1.Now comes my problem I want to have a VPN connection through the router, which supports port forwarding. Now this is how i was told to plan in the router manual ADSL line>>router(mt841)>>system with a lan card >> switch >>lan i am unable to assign the static ip to the lan card in the system any hints about how it can be done

What do u mean by that? Have you configured the DHCP server to ignore Static IPs assigned to some PCs on the network or is the MT841 acting as a DHCP server.

My Computer>>Control Panel>>Network Connections>>Lan Connection Properties by right click>> Internet Protocol (Tcp/IP) >> Properties Button >> Select use the Following IP Address >> Enter your Connection Specific Details..

Does BSNL monitor their network ? specially in 2-8 ?i have downloaded around 19 GB during 2-8 from the past 2 days they are disconnecting me like crazy (only between 2-8 ) .rest of the day my net just works fine .
is it coz of heavy downloading that i did ? i have even set my router's Auto Redial period to 20 secs . but that doesn't work in 2-8 .
something is fishy here . any idea >?
i have attached this month's log . and u can clearly see that during 2-8 from 1st Aug. to 3rd Aug. i didn't face any disconnection .

multiple disconnections in 2-8 sometimes happens to me as well ( even though the link is up ) . what i did was started using xp's pppoe dialer instead of the router . even now i sometimes get the connection reset but am reconnected within a couple of seconds ( i have set pppoe dialer's redial time to one second ) so that essentially has no effect
needless to say , there are absolutely no connection resets during normal hours.
