US is slowly moving towards abolishing traditional more than 100 years old PSTN (Our traditional exchange offices, and switch networking) to IP Phone technology.

After the recent new wave created by Google Voice in US, which aims out to give our free phone to every individuals, which made the traditional phone companies like AT&T, Verizon, US Cellular etc look like a FOOLS. In a move to benefit consumers, FCC (similar to our TRAI) is taking move towards better understanding and carving out policies for this transition. So in the coming decade we'll see traditional phones slowly fade out (Like no more floppy).

Hey,

I am not talking about using IP phones in Offices, and large organizations. Thy are and were using it for quite long time. I am talking about the whole nation shifting towards a new technology. For example, think of a situation, TRAI & BSNL and other wired line service providers decide no more wired circuit-switch network. Shift everything to IP backbone.

There are a lot of debates about negatives about this shift, keeping this aside, think of the revolution it'll make. The communication cost will be same whether you are in the next room or 10,000 miles away. There will be a lot of new business a portion of the business will go away...

We don't need IP phones to connect. All we need is an ATA Adapter (Example Linksys PAP2T-NA will cost 1500Rs) to connect to an IP address. This is the size of DSL modem communicates with server & your normal phone.

All we need is the government to open-up their policy to Voice over IP.
