hi all,
my pc config is 2.53C2D,2gb ram, 160gb hdd.
Currently xp sp3 is installed.
Thinking to install ubuntu 8.1
PARTITIONING QUERY
partitions are as
c:[fat32] 30gb
d; ntfs 30gb e;ntfs 30gb f;ntfs 30gb
free space 30gb balance.
I intend to install ubuntu 8.1 on this free space.
After reading a lot on internet i find in for ubuntu partition there is some concept of creating a root partiion, a home partition, a swap partition
pls tell me about how much i should allocate for root partition, home and swap. A few places i found that if ram is 1gb or more then there is no need for swap. While some has written for hibernation u require a swap partition.
On home partition a few have written to use fat32 so that they can be both accessed by windows and linux thus avoiding duplication.
Given this scenario of my partitions how should i go about.
MY D,E,F partitons are having roughly now 10gb free space in each of the 30gb allocated to each of them.
C: is windows where some 14 gb free space is there. There only windows and program files reside. Nothing else.

Now pls suggest me how i should go about.

FILE SYSTEM QUERY.
I find there is a ext3 and ext2 file system. Default ubuntu mentions is the former. Any difference between the two.Somewhere i read that the ext3 uses journal system to prevent file corruption in case of improper system shutdown.I would like to get myself more clarity on this.

regards

For ext3 info someplace like wikipedia might give you details, but you should anyway pick ext3 only during installation/partitioning/formatting.

For installation, I would say choose manual partitioning option and create a 2gb swap partition and a 8gb partition and select it to mount / (root). All the other ones like home, boot etc will go under this common root / mount point.

make sure you have external backups of any important files before installing because you should assume that you may destroy all your data due to a mistake during installation Very Happy

i have never used manual partitioning for dual booting. i use guided partitioning, after deleting the intended partition from XP's disk management tool.

If you want to just give Ubuntu a try without messing up the partitions, boot into Windows XP. Insert the Live CD & let it autorun.

Browse to the Root folder. DoubleClick on Umenu.exe & select "Install inside Windows" Second Option as in the screenshot above.

It will be a little slow to operate but it won't mess up your partitions & is the same as uninstalling a Simple program on the Windows OS.

Ravi.
