For some time now i have not been able to download anything from rapidshare/megaupload or even the private torrents during the night unlimited 2-8 period. :wall:

During the day time the speed is good as dls are 1.7-1.9mbps. But exactly after 2 to 2.30am the internet speed justs slows down to a crawling speed of just <56kbps. the latency rise from the average 300ms to 1500ms for all sites. treaceroutes to various sites like google yahoo show that latency is high (1200ms) at the international gateway of either Tata(VSNL) or Bharthi (Airtel). After 8am everything limps back to normal.. why is it so?

And one more thing i have observed for the past few months is that the in daytime in each session the wan channel - (can be found in modem summary page) the gateway that my modem is assigned changes just like the dynamic ip. But during the time of 1am to 8am despite numerous session changes only the dynamic ip changes and not the gateway. I am getting connected to the same gateway for the past 4 months during this 1am-8am period. is bsnl doing some sneaky things like using a software to restrct the traffic to one choked gateway during the free night unlimited 2-8 period.

if it is true then how ethical it is for bsnl to offer free night unlimted on one hand and with the other hand take it away with this restriction on traffic.

could anybody clarify me on this? :huh:

I have also the same problem with rapidshare/megaupload. But with other sites the download speeds are OK.

That is because too many people download it at that time.

You are absolutely right!!! I had been having this problem for more than 2 months...I gave nearly 10 complaints...but no use...those jackasses keep telling the same old crap "No problem on our side"...still getting pathetic speeds during NU...unable to even browse sites...it takes like 20 mins to open a normal site or many times gateway timeout ...I do feel the same thing that BSNL might be using some kind of a s/w to cap the speed..another interesting thing i had noticed is that the speeds are dead slow even till 7.58 or 7.59 and then once its 8.00 back to 1.8 Mbps..the sites still take ages to open up during this time...dont u think that the speeds would gain back considerably by 7.55 or so when many ppl stop downloading...i used to get very good speeds till the end of August during NU and suddenly its snailing...some new dirty trick followed by BSNL

One of the reason that i understood is that there lines get overloaded at that time and BSNL is least bothered to increase the line capacity.

But here in Kolkata,NU speed is increasing day by day for the last 4-5 days.....until last week it was giving very slow speed like 45-55 Kbps.....but for the last 4-5 days I am getting about 120 Kbps in average....For the last 3-4 daysthe total usage was around 3 - 3.5 GB....see below

I would suggest you to remove or edit the screencap and blacken the torrent names for your safety. After all, downloading copyright stuff is illegal and posting the torrent download names can be a problem.

Between 2AM to 8AM, it just comes to a standstill as the freeloaders hog the line here at Kalyani and even after numerous complaints, BSNL doesn't care, its unfair on people like us who have an unlimited accout, I usually like to do all my big downloads during nightime and this situation completely negates that.

me too had slow speeds during UL period, but form last 3weeks or so, am getting 1.8mbps during UL period. dont know what they did, but am getting gud speed. am in BLR, even on RS, with single stream, i get gud speed like 256kbps-1.5mbps, this i found today, strange, free RS users shd get 500kbps max.

dont know when they are going to screwit up back to slow speeds

Free rapidshare users are supposed to get 500KBps and not 500kbps which translates to around 4mbps as opposed to 60kbps which is the latter. BSNL does not provide 4mbps connections yet so we are way below the allowed limit for free users.

& all i get is 30kBps max@torrents for being data1 UL user.....think abt it!

actually it is 500 kilobit/s not kilobyte/s, check rapidshare news, date: july 2, 2008

yes you are right. I checked on that news but its not applicable anymore. That is why their speedometer jpg has been changed and does not specify any max speed any more. Now the new max speed for free user is allocated dynamically according to the network load. Its given in the september 2 news.

I used to get around 220 kiloBytes/sec in RS free during Aug and September...so that comes to roughly 1.8 Mbps!!
