Hi,

I have 256 kbps dataone broadband connection. The download speeds are approximately 30Kbps. Please help me calculate how much MB of data will be downloded per hour. What is the formula?

30 Kbps or 30 KBps?

b = bit; B = byte; 8 bit = 1 byte

Ideally a 256 kbps connection would give 256/8=32 kBps, so I would assume you get 30 KBps and not 30 kbps.

Data transferred = 30 kilo bytes per second

Use primary maths as you did in school,

In 1 second, data transferred = 30 Kilo bytes
In 1 minute, data transferred = 30*60 kilo bytes
In 1 hour, data transferred = 30*60*60 = 108,000 bytes = 108 MB approx

you can use bandwidth monitoring softwares like netlimiter, bwmeter etc. to look at your daily usages without requiring a username/password.

why don't you have your own user/pass ? call up the bsnl and ask them to give you that. if it fails take this to higher authorities. because your bill will be calculated according to bsnl portal. so this is a matter of serious concern for you.

do you want wi-fi badly ? if not you can either buy a switch and build a LAN or buy a cheap dlink ethernet card, put it on desktop motherboard, connect it to laptop using a lan cable and configure your onboard lan card to masquerade. there is a nice thread on the forum which has details in step by step with pictures.

i don't think bsnl is interested what we dl through p2p as there is no organization like mpaa/riaa here yet and ip law is weak - not as tough as in UK where ISP is made responsible for what their customer dl. to be on safe side use encryption in your torrents.

they can track everything they want to, but as freedom said, bsnl isn't really interested in this stuff till now. in the future who knows.

and yes, to feel a bit more comfortable using torrents, use encryption and ip block lists or peerguardian.
