Hi. I am also from Chennai and used a hathway cable internet connection ( infact 2 connections, one at home and one at Office. My experience whith hathway has been terrible. yes their customer service responds immediately but their speeds are pathetic. They promise 256 kbps and deliver only 128 or less. At no time did it even go anywhere close to 256. Prior to entry of BSNL and VSNL into broadband I used hathway. I have now changed my office to BSNL and home to tataindicom. The speeds are over 256 kbps.

yes coming to your subject since 2003 may i have been using a Linksys wireless router with my Hathway connection without any problems. Presently I use the netgear wireless router with my BSNL connection at Office.
Hathway uses static IP address settings.
You will need these details which are available on the cable modem provided by them. If not use the ipcongig command with winXP with the computer directly connected to the cable modem to find the details.
Access the netgear router using 192.168.0.1.

Basic settings
Use the NO Login in required page.

Fill in the static IP address and DNS addresses as given by hathway.
Save the settings

Switch off the modem and then switch it on. Then switch on. Then switch on the router.
First connect to the router by ethernet cable and see that you are able to access the net.
If you cannot login you may require to reset the modem. this is dome at the control station which you will have to ask hathway ( tell them you reformatted the machine)
Otherwise you check the use computer mac address in the router basic setup page.

hopefully this could help you.
My advise throw out hathway. their speeds are bullshit. i returned two connections and they have still not bothered to collect the modems ( on hire)

@seshu, hi i've no problems configuring the router with internet connections, as ive used it abroad before. its just refusing to work with the hathway connection

@Gizimofreek, thanks for the help, i already tried what you had mentioned and instead of pc mac address i put in teh cable modem mac address cause i think that is wat hathway uses to verify. but i never called them up to reset the modem will try that too. and yeah i will eventually switch frm hathway, only reason for taking this instead of bsnl is hathway takes bout 2 days to set up internet vs teh 2 weeks its already been waiting for bsnl, n im here only for 3months so took hathway as they didnt charge installation fees and stuff.

Hathway ties your IP address to your MAC Address. So either call them up and ask them to reset the MAC address (your router should be connected to the cable modem and turned on) which they should do for you. Or as mentioned above, set up your router to clone your computer's NIC MAC address, which should be written on the NIC or you can obtain from typing ipconfig /all in the command line; your MAC should be listed for example: Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-30-F1-1F-B3-CE

nope, just the NIC MAC, cause if it was the the Cable Modem's MAC, it would not matter!

oh thanks guys, thanks very much. when i clone the NIC MAC address it works just fine.
p.s yes hathway is crap, speeds i get is at most about 1/3 of the 256kbps. but im here only for a short while, so if i switch to bsnl it will take atleast 2 weeks to get connection, so will stick to hathway.
thanks again guys

@hellotoall

Welcome aboard, first of all. Please start a new thread for a new topic. The thread you are posting to dates back to Fri Mar 17, 2006 11:28 pm

To your problem. Your subnet mask seems to be wrong. Try to set it to 255.255.0.0 & hope you get success.

Keep us updated.

Ravi.
