The MAC Address of most modems, etc, is usually given on a label on the case!

Your modem cannot be locked by an ISP. It is something complete in itself.
They can lock you out of the setup (most easily and basically, by changing the password, of course!). The friend with whom I stay in London has a broadband connection with a Huawei modem just like my old BSNL modem --- but I am unable to access any of the admin functions on it.

Errr.... On somebody else's machine, without a copy of the settings, which I wouldn't be able to know without accessing them... No! Smile

It is also one of those free-with-the-phone connections. Whilst they might seem an amazing deal to us here in India, paying through our noses for our not-very-broadband, they do not come with particularly helpful and knowledgeable support staff.
